FUT Hair Transplant Post Operative Care

Are you planning to undergo FUT hair transplant to restore a thicker and fuller head of hair? Remember post-op care plays a crucial role in determining the ultimate outcome of the surgery. If you wish to recover quickly and uneventfully from your hair transplant, and get the most out of the surgery, follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions very carefully. Here are Top 10 Tips you should follow after FUT Hair Transplant to ensure a speedy recovery and to reduce the risk of damage to the newly transplanted follicles.

  1. Take Prescription Medicines: Immediately after the hair transplant, your scalp will be sore and tender. Start taking prescribed medicines right after the transplant to minimize post-op discomfort. Cold compressions may also help relieve pain and itching, but be very gentle. The newly implanted follicles are very vulnerable to damage and dislodging in the early stages.
  2. Don’t Wash Scalp For 24 Hours: Washing hair is not allowed for 24 to 48 hours following the surgery, once again because the new follicles may get damaged. On the 3rd day of the surgery, the clinic staff will wash your head for the first time to tell you the right way to do washings post-transplant. Don’t let the shower water fall directly on the head. Instead, use a cup to pour water carefully on the scalp.
  3. Sleep With Head Elevated: Bleeding and swelling are the two most common side effects of FUT hair transplant. You cannot completely avoid these side effects, but you can at least minimize the severity by keeping your head continuously elevated above body level for the first few days. Sleep with 2, 3 pillows under the neck.
  4. Don’t Take Blood Thinners: Aspirin, ibuprofen and numerous other pain management medications fall under this category. You are strongly recommended to avoid these drugs for 2-3 weeks after the transplant. These medicines can significantly hamper wound healing and hair regrowth process.
  5. Avoid Smoking And Drinking: Cigarettes and alcohol both hamper the healing process as well as the growth of newly transplanted hair follicles. Therefore it is strictly recommended to avoid smoking and drinking for a significant time before and after the surgery. Quit smoking for at least two weeks before and after surgery, whereas alcohol should be avoided for 5 to 7 days.
  6. Say No To Drugs: Like smoking and drinking, drugs are also a big no when it comes to surgical hair restoration. In fact, most surgeons don’t operate patients who have been on drugs during the last 4 to 5 weeks. Same rule applies after the surgery. Avoid any sort of drugs for at least a month following surgery, if you really wish to get the most out of your FUT Hair Transplant.
  7. Avoid Sun Exposure: Don’t expose your newly treated scalp to direct sunlight. Avoid exposing the newly transplanted follicles to the UV rays of the sun for at least a month. When going out, wear a wide-brimmed loose hat. For additional cover, take an umbrella, especially if going out during peak hours – 10 am to 4 pm.
  8. Avoid Strenuous Activities: You will be allowed to resume most of routine activities within a week, but avoid indulging in vigorous physical activities such as exercise, running, jogging and sports. These activities will cause you to sweat, and this can ultimately lead to infection.
  9. Don’t Pick Or Scratch At The Scab: Picking and scratching at the scab is strongly not recommended. This can damage or dislodge the new follicles. Also, your hands contain thousands of bacteria which can infect the wounds, affecting the recovery process as well as the outcome of the surgery.
  10. Patience Is The Key: Hair regrowth after FUT Hair Transplant is not an overnight process. It takes several months before the follicles start growing hair and final result of the surgery becomes visible after 12 to 18 months. It is important that you stay determined and tolerant during all this time.
