You don’t need to go to a hair specialist or purchase expensive over-the-counter anti-dandruff serums and shampoos as it can be effectively treated with some easy to do natural remedies.

Here are 5 home remedies for dandruff that you can use to bid adieu to these snowy flakes:

  1. Yogurt and Pepper:

Yogurt is rich in friendly bacteria that can help counter the effect of dandruff causing fungi. Pepper also has antifungal properties, and together these two help prevent scaling of the scalp.

  • Take two teaspoons of black pepper and grind them finely.
  • Add black pepper powder into one cup of whipped yogurt.
  • Mix the two thoroughly until you get a fine, smooth paste.
  • Apply the mixture onto your scalp and hair.
  • Leave it on for an hour and then wash off with a mild shampoo and normal water.
  • Repeat this once a week for a couple of months.
  1. White Vinegar

White vinegar is also capable of killing dandruff-causing bacteria and fungi. Besides that, the acidic content in vinegar also helps in treating dryness and reducing itchiness of the scalp. This drastically reduces flaking of skin.

  • Take half cup of white vinegar and boil it on low flame for 2-3 minutes.
  • Let it cool to room temperature and then mix one with two cups of water.
  • Use this mixture to massage your scalp for 3-5 minutes.
  • Leave it on for a few minutes and then shampoo your hair as usual.
  • You can also use highly diluted vinegar (one tablespoon in one mug of water) for a final rinse after washing your hair.
  1. Baking Soda:

Baking soda is a natural exfoliant that allows you to scrub your scalp gently, without irritating the skin. Regular exfoliation is essential to get rid of dandruff buildups. Besides that, baking soda also has antifungal properties, and thus helps reduce overactive fungi that cause dandruff. It also helps balance the pH levels on the scalp.

  • Wet your hair thoroughly.
  • Ring out any excess water.
  • Apply a handful of baking soda onto your scalp.
  • Gently scrub your scalp in circular motion using finger tips.
  • After massaging for a couple of minutes, rinse your hair well with lukewarm water.
  • Repeat this twice a week for best results.
  1. Neem Leaves:

Neem has antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, which make it an effective home remedy for almost all types of skin infections and irritations. It is also an age-old remedy for dandruff.

  • Take a handful of neem leaves and wash them thoroughly.
  • Boil these leaves in 4 cups of water for half an hour.
  • Grind boiled leaves to get a fine paste.
  • Apply this paste onto your scalp, making sure every inch of the scalp is covered.
  • Leave it on for half an hour and then wash off with water.
  • Shampoo your hair as usual.
  1. Unripe Apples:

Unripe apples are a rich source of Procyanidin B-2, a natural compound that helps promote healthy hair growth. The acidic content in apples also helps fight dandruff.

  • Extract 4 tablespoons of apple juice.
  • Dilute it with three tablespoons of water.
  • Generously apply this mixture to the scalp.
  • Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then wash off with a mild shampoo.
  • Repeat this once or twice a week for best results.
