How Many Hair Transplants Can I Have?

Hair transplants appear to be the order of the day to get rid of hair loss all over the world. The situation is pretty similar in the Arab Emirates as well. People are using the latest techniques to get their much loved locks back.

At times, a person actually needs more than a single hair transplant surgery in order to have their hair completely restored. This can be a touch annoying for some. People often ask that how many hair transplants a person can have? There is no single answer to this question and it depends on a number of factors. We shall look at them in the following lines.

The Grafts Requirements

The number of transplant surgeries needed greatly depends on the number of grafts needed for the desired results. The current methods generally allow for about a maximum of 4000-5000 grafts per session. If a patient needs more grafts than that, certainly two or more surgeries will be needed.

Type of Procedure

There are a number of hair transplants procedures that are available and each has a different level of invasiveness. FUT or strip method is the most invasive of all options in which a strip of scalp is removed for the purpose of extracting follicles. The number of follicles obtained are generally around 2500.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) uses a punch like mechanism and removes individual follicles typically 1mm in size. This is lesser invasive and does not affect the skin as badly as a strip method transplant and future surgeries are more likely if needed. The Stem Cell FUE is even less invasive and removes a follicle of 0.5 to 0.7mm in size.

Skills of the Surgeon

How well the surgeon does his or her job is also crucial. When done skillfully, future surgeries should not be a problem. However, if the surgeon does not perform a neat job, it is possible that the skin may get damaged and future surgery potential may be lessened as a result.

Donor Area Capacity

The capacity of the donor site is a big issue. A person may be in good shape of getting multiple surgeries but may not have the follicles available for them. The numbers of grafts that are available also play a major role in how many transplants a patient may have.

Healing also is very important and even though a person may have enough grafts for future surgeries, they may not take place if the person heals poorly from the first one.
