Like any surgery, there are certain precautions that must be taken by a person prior to a hair transplant surgery. These may need to be exercised from a couple of weeks before the procedure. Most of them are nothing out of the ordinary and can be easily followed. We shall briefly discuss these in the following lines.
Use of Blood Thinning Medications
If you are using blood thinning medications, you should consult with your doctor about them before you undergo a hair transplant. These can have harmful effects during the transplant procedure. It is recommended that they should not be taken for two weeks before the surgery.
Get your hair cut done 14 days before the transplant. It is suggested that the hair should be at least half an inch long at the time of the procedure is being performed. You might want to walk in with normal length hair and let the hair transplant team take care of it as per their requirements.
There are certain anti-inflammatory drugs and aspirin that should not be used for seven days before a hair transplant. These particularly include NSAIDs. If you are using them, consult your doctor in this regard ahead of time.
Smoking should not be done for a minimum of seven days leading up to the hair transplant. The biggest issue with smoking is that it reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood which deprives various parts of the body including scalp of some important nutrients. It is also recommended that smoking is not done for at least another week after the hair transplant.
Vitamins B and E
It is recommended that consumption of Vitamins B and E should be stopped a week prior to the hair transplant surgery. Any multivitamins that may include these two vitamins should also not be taken during this period.
In case a person consumes alcohol, it should be stopped for a minimum of three days before the hair transplant procedure.
Many people take caffeine on a daily basis in form of tea, coffee or energy drinks. Caffeine should not be used a day before the transplant. It increases the blood pressure and can cause bleeding during the procedure.
